Town of Middleburg Announces Water System Maintenance Activities
MIDDLEBURG, Va., January 4, 2021 – The Town of Middleburg is informing customers of upcoming maintenance activities intended to support the ongoing and long-term operations of the Town’s waterworks. The Town’s water treatment plant located on The Plains Road – referred to as the “Well 4 Treatment Plant” – requires a regular maintenance function using a large volume of water. This maintenance activity pulls water from the Town water system at a high rate of flow, similar to flushing a hydrant. This process can stir up water in the Town’s mains and result in limited discoloration of water throughout the Town.
The Town’s water operator, IES, intends to perform this maintenance activity on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, around 9am. IES will take appropriate steps to limit any impact to the water system and customers. Should your water be discolored, please flush your cold water faucets until the water clears. Please note that the Town’s water is treated and safe, even if it is slightly discolored for a brief period of time.
To further reduce the instances of discoloration in the water system, the Town is taking a number of proactive steps. First, IES is anticipating to flush all of the Town’s water mains within the next two weeks. Second, the Town’s water tank contractor will be conducting a washout of the Marshall Street water tank in the coming months. Third, the Town is proceeding with a capital project at the Well 4 Treatment Plant to reduce the dependency on the Town’s water system for this regular maintenance activity.
Finally, the Town anticipates automating this regular maintenance activity in the near future and scheduling it to be conducted during the overnight hours. This will allow any water that is stirred up to settle overnight before the majority of customers will be using water. More information will be provided to customers prior to any of these maintenance activities occurring.
Customers with questions are encouraged to contact the Town at 540-687-5152 during business hours. Any after-hours emergencies related to water or sewer service should be directed to IES at 800-648-1010.

About the Town of Middleburg
Located approximately 50 minutes west of Washington, D.C. in Virginia horse country, the Town of Middleburg has approximately 800 residents. Established in 1787 by Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman, Levin Powell, the Town was previously called "Chinn's Crossroads." Powell chose the name Middleburg because of the town's location midway between Alexandria and Winchester on the Ashby Gap trading route (now Route 50). Middleburg remains a charming town frequented by visitors who flock to its luxury resort and historic inns, walkable tree-lined streets, signature shops, wineries, breweries, cidery/distillery and chef-driven restaurants. Middleburg was recognized in 2008 for its historic preservation efforts by being designated a Preserve America Community. For more information, visit www.MiddleburgVa.gov.
