Mayoral and Councilmember elections are held in November of each odd year, and successful candidates take office on January 1st of the following year.
The term of the Mayor is for two years, and the terms of Councilmembers are for four years.
Candidates interested in running for public office must meet certain qualifications and are required to file specific documents in order to appear on the ballot. View information from the Virginia State Board of Elections about becoming a candidate.
