Public Water & Sewer Service

The Town of Middleburg provides water to its residents from five ground wells, which feed into the distribution system and two storage tanks (water towers). Read about how the Source Water Protection Team helps keep our sourcewater safe and protected at this link.

Sanitary sewer service is provided through critical infrastructure which includes a wastewater treatment plant at the east end of town and a pumping station on the west end of Town.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR WATER LINES

One of the most common questions received by the Town is: who is responsible for maintenance and repairs of water and sewer lines in the Town? According to the Town's adopted Ordinances and Supplemental Water & Sewer Regulations, the Town of Middleburg is only responsible for the water and sewer mains, along with any water meters.

Individual property owners are responsible for the lateral (service pipe) to/from their property to the main, including any pipes that run through public right-of-way or under streets. This also includes any water lateral between the water meter and the main, as well as any sewer lateral between the property line and the main.

The Town of Middleburg has a program by which it will maintain certain laterals if they meet specific criteria and an application is approved by the Town Manager. The Town encourages you to review the Supplemental Water & Sewer Regulations and/or call the Town Office for more information.

Due to the expense of repairing broken laterals, the Town of Middleburg encourages property owners to contact their insurance carrier or to consider third-party insurance programs to help with the cost of lateral repairs.

Water Main Flushing and Maintenance

Periodically, the Town flushes the water mains to clear them of sediment. The Town notifies residents of these events and their effect on your water service. If you would like to receive these notices, please sign up for alerts in the "Alert Center". If there is a break in the water main (very infrequent), or there is a need to draw water from hydrants for fire suppression activities, you may not receive warning of a change in the pressure or quality of your water service. Please notify the Town Office, 540-687-5152, if you experience unexpected changes in your service.

Inboden Environmental Services (IES) is responsible for the operation of the Town’s water/sewer system. Should you experience problems after-hours, please call their after-hours number 800-648-1010).

THINK BEFORE YOU FLUSH!

One of the biggest challenges facing municipalities is the amount of inappropriate items being flushed down a toilet or drain. The following items should NEVER be flushed or put down a drain:

  • Baby wipes
  • Grease
  • Solid Items
  • Contraceptives
  • Feminine Products
  • Prescription Drugs/Medications
  • Paper Towels
  • Other products that will not break down in water

Please view this helpful flyer about what is appropriate to flush down the drain!
