Backflow Prevention and Cross Connection Control

In order to ensure the safety of our drinking water, the Town of Middleburg is mandated by the Virginia Department of Health and by Town Code to confirm that proper measures are installed and inspected annually at properties that could have the potential for “backflow” or “cross-connection” to the Town’s water supply.

You can read more about the Town's Cross-Connection Program in our Supplemental Water & Sewer Regulations.

Examples of possible sources of cross-connection include: lawn irrigation systems; water softeners or filters*; swimming pools; yard hydrants; fire suppression/sprinkler systems; booster pumps or water tanks (other than hot water tanks); and use of any chemical or dangerous materials.

You can learn more on Loudoun Water's page here.

REQUIRED ANNUAL INSPECTIONS

All properties that could have a cross connection with the Town's drinking water must have back flow prevention in place and must provide evidence that the back flow prevention device is inspected annually.*

The Town does not keep a list of active inspectors. However, the Loudoun Water and the Town of Leesburg keep a listing of certified inspectors.

Annual inspections must be completed by May 1st of each year.

*Property owners that only have a water softener or whole-house water filtration system are only required to have a check-valve on the service line to that appliance. No "testable" back flow preventer is required, and once proof of a check-valve is provided to the Town, no annual inspection is required.*

Completed inspections can be submitted via email to backflow@middleburgva.gov or by using the online form here.
