Summer Travel Safety Tips (6)

Vacation Safety Tips from the Middleburg Police Department

As summer arrives and vacation plans take shape, it's essential to ensure your home is secure while you're away. Here are some crucial tips to keep your property safe:

Home Security Checklist

Lock All Doors and Windows: Double-check that all entry points, including garage doors and basement windows, are securely locked.

Light Up Your Property: Use timers for indoor and outdoor lights to give the impression that someone is home. Motion-sensor lights can be a great deterrent for would-be intruders.

Security Systems: Activate your home security system if you have one. Consider adding security cameras for added peace of mind.

Appearance of Occupancy

Hold Mail and Deliveries: Stop your mail and newspaper deliveries, or have a trusted neighbor collect them for you to avoid a buildup that signals an empty home.

Maintain Your Yard: Arrange for someone to mow your lawn and take care of any outdoor maintenance, keeping your property looking lived-in.

Park a Car in the Driveway: If possible, have a neighbor park their car in your driveway to create the illusion that someone is home.

Trusted Neighbors and Friends

Notify Trusted Neighbors: Inform a trusted neighbor or friend of your travel plans. Provide them with a key and contact information in case of emergencies.

Spare Keys: Avoid leaving spare keys outside under mats or in other obvious hiding spots. Give a spare key to a neighbor or friend instead.

Stay Connected: Share your travel itinerary with a trusted neighbor or family member and check in periodically to ensure everything is fine at home.

Additional Precautions

Unplug Electronics: Unplug non-essential electronics to protect them from power surges and save on energy.

Turn Off Water: If you’re going away for an extended period, consider turning off the water supply to prevent leaks or flooding.
